SUPERMAN Ultimate Collection DVD -- Word of Warning

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Sarcastic comments about SUPERMAN III aside (yes I liked it, so there, and I realize I'm nearly alone), there's some trouble with the new SUPERMAN ULTIMATE EDITION DVD box set coming this week.

Apparently, the SUPERMAN III DVD isn't the new Special Edition with the deleted scenes, commentary and vintage doc -- but rather the same DVD Warner released in 2001.

So far everyone who has opened their set has confirmed it.

This doesn't apply apparently to the REEVE box set, but it likely means Warner will be doing quite a massive exchange program on this first pressing.

Just a heads up! :)

Yikes! I've been reading about this the past couple of days over at the Home Theater Forum and was wondering if Andy might chime in. Couple this with the lack of the promised original sound mix on the theatrical version of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE and you have a lot of unhappy Superman fans. I'm willing to give Warners a break (I'm sure they'll find some way to replace the wrong discs), but having this news break on a long holiday weekend, with Warners unable to respond until Monday (at least), just gives people more time to get worked up over it.

As for me, I'm still looking forward to receiving my box set next week. There are plenty of other features to watch while I wait for any replacement discs.

BTW, Andy, I love "The Return of the Snowflakes"!

This is why I plan on just getting the different films separately when I want them!

I can certainly understand that approach, Eric. I figured, however, that since I wanted the 4-disc STM, the 2-disc SR, and the Donner cut, that the total price would be about the same as the Ultimate Box set -- I just consider all of the other "lesser" discs a free bonus!

I have been going back and forth about having all those "bonus" discs of movies I'll never watch (SUPE III and IV) as opposed to buying what I really want (SUPE 1 and II)....it is cheaper to get the box sets, but with the news above, looks like I might have to just buy things separately, especially if I'm going to get jipped with an inferior version of a movie I don't even want to watch!

If it's true the sound mix option isn't there for the original cut of the first movie that's no big deal with me since the only time I was ever really turned off by a new sound mix was with "Jaws" and they thankfully rectified that on the last DVD release.

I have off-air recordings of the TV cuts of I and II so the irony is that now I'll be able to have three cuts of those two films. The long TV cut of I is the only one where all of Williams music for "Lex Luthor's Lair" could be included. That said I still wish we didn't have anti-copy measures to keep me from doing the ultimate fan cut of II! :)

If you guys are interested in the Ultimate set regardless (and I can't imagine they won't have an exchange up fast), Barnes and Noble.com has a MASSIVE sale that brings the total to just about $52 after tax.

That's probably the best price on the set:

-Use code X9Y3G8Y for 25% off (you don't need to be a BN card member, either -- code works when you put it in under the membership line)

-AAA Discount for members (5% currently, supposed to be going up to 10% this week)

Free shipping and tax is dependant on where you are. Not a bad idea!

Mark: you're welcome, I had to get it up there before we left this Monday!

Hey, Andy: Thanks for the tip re: BN.com. I canceled my order with Amazon and replaced it at BN, saving myself about $14.00! (I don't owe you a cut, do I? :))

I just hope they'll ship it in the next couple of days. (I had selected the "free supersaver" shipping at Amazon, so I should still get it around the same time.)

BN might take a little longer but it's worth the $$$.

I'm still waiting to see if I get review copies before I indulge, but I might end up going for the Reeve box-set simply because I don't want to see SUPERMAN RETURNS ever again!

Guys,

Thanks to a $25 gift certificate, my final cost on the ULTIMATE EDITION was $45.

Again, I couldn't buy all of those individually for that price and it included a wonderful metal tin that will, undoubtedly, outlast my lifespan on this plan. Overall, a nice set.
Indeed,
Ed

hey, has everyone seen this?

This isn't just for SUPERMAN III but also the missing 2-track original mix of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE's soundtrack (which goes for ALL Copies of this new DVD version).

-------
Statement from Warner Home Video, November 27, 2006

Bonus content was omitted from the "Superman III Deluxe Edition" in the 14-disc "Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition." Furthermore, disc one of "Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition" did not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. Neither disc is known to be physically defective in any way.

Warner Home Video wants to extend apologies to all of our loyal Superman fans who've waited so patiently for these great collections and has taken immediate steps to correct these errors with the intention of standing behind our product 100%.

Replacement discs can be obtained by calling: 800-553-6937. The exchange program applies only to purchases of the “Superman III Deluxe Edition” in the “Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition” and to disc one of “Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition,” available as a single title, as well as in “The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection” and in the “Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition.”

Which is of no damn use whatsoever to those of us outside the USA who ordered the set from the States because the UK version is missing one disc.
