MJ nailed it. Not that it'll be an issue much longer, but between that and a whole slew of other tie-ins it was ridiculous.

You also would think they could afford microphones that worked!

Hearing Melissa McCarthy's mike fuzzing out during the BEST SOUND awards was hilarious. They should have improvised a bit around it.

Between Baby Yoda and Avengers 5: Who's In This, Again? and Devil Wears Prada 2 (which, incredibly, got the coveted "first weekend of May" summer release slot, and I cannot for the life of me remember the last time that weekend went to a movie that wasn't an action, superhero or big F/X movie  ), there was a really ugly, crass commercialism this year, like Disney's terrified of the double threats of selling a pair of faded franchises that are wheezing on life support and losing the Oscars to YouTube by the end of the decade.

Anyways, it was nice to see Lalo Schifrin make his way into the In Memoriam segment, which was one of the most tasteful and effective ones in recent memory (and using an INSTRUMENTAL, instead of a song performance that overshadows the roll call of those we lost, at least until "Babs'' mawkish conclusion). I did find it funny that the tribute to Rob Reiner's filmography ended in 1995 (ignored a full THREE DECADES' worth of movies absolutely no one liked, or remembers), and conspicuously skipped over North.

Didn't watch a single moment of the show this year. No idea what won anything!

I noticed they skipped over North as well, and neglected the post-1995 titles that didn't fare very well. But I do think the in memorium was fine overall. The rest of the show was just dull and pokey. I loved that Amy Madigan won, but that was about it. I really didn't like One Battle After Another.

The problem with the In Memoriam segment is that it's now SO long that if they miss someone, it really looks bad. I mean, they've gone from a listing of personnel most film buffs would recognize, to now listing (seemingly) everything from make-up artists to sound editors the common person would never pay attention to. If it's a milestone cinematic achievement they are associated with, that's one thing -- but one guy last night just said "Lawyer" under his name. :?

Where was James Vanderbeek also? Brigitte Bardot? OK I get Vanderbeek was best known for TV but a very recognizable young actor still who just passed tragically...I think I get more out of that than "Lawyer."

I came in and out of the show -- it ran so long despite the early start it was easy to do so.

Very slow. Lots of speechifying. Some bad moments. SINNERS had too much vampire bloodbath in its 2nd half to appeal to the high brow Oscar voter so in hindsight I probably shouldn't have been surprised it won for Jordan, though even that felt like a "lifetime achievement" award. At least his speech was classy. Buckley's was the best of the night. I also disliked the Anderson film though we should all be happy we were spared a Penn acceptance speech at least!

Conan was barely passable. He's become increasingly smug over time and his pretentiousness when he gets "serious" I find irritating.

Bill Maher's Oscars monologue from last weekend is absolutely terrific.

Sure, I'll disagree on the merits of REDS but this NAILS it in so many ways...

I'm not the world's biggest fan of Reds either, as I have no use for communism.... But, I have to give it a little credit. In its second half, it shows how Soviet communism screwed over its supporters and was a failed system. That is more honesty than something like One Battle After Another offer today. It might not be much, especially after all the rah-rah Communist material of the first half of Reds, but at least it is a slight recognition of the truth instead of ignoring or rebutting it entirely.
